Guiding you on the path to US Citizenship

No doubt about it--the decision to become a US citizen is a major one. Understandably, some immigrants hesitate to cut legal ties to their home of origin. Furthermore, the process is not an easy one. There are rules for eligibility. There is a lot of waiting and paperwork involved. At P. Grossman, a Professional Law Corporation, our lawyers have the experience and skill to simplify and expedite your naturalization. If you want your naturalization application process to go as smoothly as possible, contact a naturalization lawyer at P. Grossman, a Professional Law Corporation for a consultation.

Why should I become a citizen?

As a naturalized citizen, you would enjoy the same rights and privileges as native citizens. Rights include freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and the right to vote in US elections.

More importantly, a citizen accused of a crime is treated very differently from a non-citizen. Believe it or not, most crimes are deportable offenses. It does not matter if you have been a tourist for two months, or a legal permanent resident for your entire life. As a citizen, you have far more rights and protections under the law.

If you file a family petition, the wait for visas can last three months to several years. As a citizen, your family members would have far less time to wait. Citizens have no wait time at all for a visa if they want to bring spouses, minor children, or parents (if the citizen children are over 21 years old).

Who is eligible to become a citizen?

Generally, in order to be eligible for citizenship you need to satisfy the following:

  • Legal permanent residency for five years--or three years, if married to a US citizen;
  • Good Moral Character for the last five years; and
  • Pass an exam and English Requirements. (Aliens may be exempt from the English requirement if (1) over 50 years old and have been a lawful permanent resident for 20 years or (2) over 55 years old and have been a lawful permanent resident for 15 years.

If you are uncertain about your eligibility, call our office. We can help you determine your eligibility. On occasion, we have even had clients who were already citizens, and did not know it before they consulted us.
